What is Writing for the Real World?
Writing for the Real World (W4TRW) is an eighth-grade elective available for students who have a passion for writing. The focus of the course is on writing non-fiction pieces with the exception of a poetry unit to coincide with National Poetry Month.
Through readings and books selected by the teacher, as well as those chosen by students, the class will deconstruct the art of essay writing, including an analysis of impact on audience and purpose of style. Other writing genres will be explored as well, as will media literacy, advertising and marketing, and other "real world" applications of writing. Students will write in response to what they read, and about issues that are important to them, with the intention that their work will be read by audiences both inside and outside of Grover Middle School. W4TRW is not designed to provide assistance to struggling writers; it is an enrichment opportunity for students who enjoy writing and look to write more, beyond their IRLA classroom.
This workshop-style, year-long course enables students to explore the craft of writing through publication in "real world" outlets, on the internet, in publications, and for competitions.
