INFORMATION FOR NEW STUDENTS - all grade levels
Welcome to Thomas R. Grover Middle School! If you have found the PRISM website, it must be because you're curious about Grover's PRISM program and what you can do in PRISM. (Or not -- there is no requirement to participate in PRISM in order to have success at Grover Middle School!)
The first step of the PRISM program is for students to be SELF-DIRECTED in choosing whether they wish to participate in Grover's gifted & talented / academic enrichment program. Then they choose their participation option(s). Students should be motivated to participate in PRISM, as this program requires "extra work" on top of students' regular classes. All PRISM programs begin in September / October and are school year-long. There is no pre-requisite; students may choose to participate at the start of any school year.
There is NO PERMISSION FORM and NO TESTING required to participate in PRISM. All 6th grade students will be introduced to PRISM in October in their team classes. Students who are new to Grover in 7th or 8th grade should stop by, call or email Mrs. Cohen to talk about whether PRISM is "for them."
However, there IS A PERMISSION FORM required to attend the Future Problem Solving (FPS) workshop held at the start of the school year. If you have read the information in the FPS tab / link on this website and you are interested in participating in FPS, be sure to register for this workshop, as space is limited.
There will be a PRISM OPEN HOUSE for parents in October as well.
Students in 6th grade choose to participate in ONE of two options:
- The Future Problem Solving (a team competition which uses a six-step process to solve problems set in the future) OR
- The Inquiry Project (a year-long research project about a topic of your choosing through which you learn research skills)
Students in 7th and 8th grades may choose to participate in one or two options:
- The Future Problem Solving (a team competition which uses a six-step process to solve problems set in the future) AND EITHER
- National History Day OR The Inquiry Project
ALL STUDENTS (whether they choose to "do PRISM" or not) can participate in the FPS Scenario Writing competition.
There will be a workshop in October for all interested students -- there are no class meetings to attend, but participants are expected to required the program deadlines.
Please use the links on this website to find more information about all of these programs.
